Cirtex® Gabions

Cirtex® Gabions are a tried and proven method of both retaining soil and providing erosion and scour protection.

Gabions have been popular for many years due to their flexibility and proven performance. Traditionally when gabion baskets were rock filled they could be designed to act as a monolithic mass for retaining wall construction that was quite flexible, free draining and well suited to remote construction areas. In addition to this application Cirtex can advise on the option of using TerraLink gabions as a facing on a reinforced soil structure, which can be more economical than a gravity retaining wall in some applications.

Cirtex gabions are supplied with a BEZINAL 2000 90% Zinc + 10% Aluminium coating, the new generation long life alloy coating offering double the protection than the commonly available 95% Zinc + 5% AL coating systems and an extra coating of PVC to provide protection to the galvanising and an additional corrosion barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend using rock with a nominal diameter of between 100 mm to 250 mm. The size of the rock should be reasonably well graded with not more than 10% smaller than 100 mm diameter. Where correct size material is limited, the engineer may approve the use of smaller material in the central 50% of the cross-sectional area of each gabion, with the correct sized rock on the outer faces.

Any type of crushed rock with broken faces that is hard and durable will be suitable as infill material for the Gabion baskets. Some examples are basalt, sandstone or even cobbles. Note the rock must meet the size requirement of 100-250mm diameter. Rounded river rock is not recommended and can cause the gabion basket to bulge and loose structural integrity.

All Cirtex Gabions are galvanised. However, PVC gabions have an additional polymer coating that increases durability.

Gabion walls are flexible structures and offer good seismic performance. They can utilise locally available materials and provide erosion protection as well as structural support when correctly installed. Gabions are an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete retaining walls. Gabions are simple, easy to build and cost effective. They form a porous flexible structure that facilitates water pressure dissipation and are able to accommodate differential settlement.

Gabions are mostly used as gravity retaining walls, although they can be used for erosion protection, bank stabilisation, as noise barriers, or even as a temporary flood wall. Moreover, they are commonly used to create aesthetic and functional architectural features in outdoor decoration and landscaping.
